Past Activities
Fay Marshall has had third collection of poems 'After the Battle' published by Scriptora in September 2010. This follows her previous collections 'and' (Envoi Poets Publications, 1991) and 'Mapping the Debris' (National Poetry Foundation, 2000).
The last two collections were under the name 'Fay C. Marshall'. From the back cover: 'After the Battle' has a distincly European flavour, with translations from the French, German and Russian, and a 7-poem sequence 'Euro-Routes / Euro-Roots'. Green issues figure largely, and various other topics include a sinister rose-grower, a picture by Constable, the Boat Race and a complaint to A.E. Fay Marshall's poem 'Henry Fish, Infant' has been published in 'South' poetry magazine (see Members' work 2010b). Fay will be taking part in their reading event in Southampton on the 21st October (full details of the event at www.southpoetry.org )
In July 2010, Fay Marshall's poem 'Victorian Values' won first prize in SWAG's "Oscars" competition (theme Oscar Wilde's life and work).
At the same event, Fay read her poem 'Misery Memoirs' and Teresa Wilkins read her poem 'In my lovely English garden' and they read jointly Fay's 'Conjugal Rites.' In May 2010, Fay Marshall had a second story, 'The Intergalatic Inspection', published by Spikethecat, in the competition prizewinners anthology 'The Last Laugh'.
Her story 'After All These Years' has won second prize in the Society of Women Writers & Journalists' Morris duo short story competition, also in May 2010. A selection of Fay Marshall's stories that have previously won prizes in S.S.W.J competitions can be read at www.swwj.co.uk
On 17th April 2010, several members of the Group took part in a poetry reading at the Slipstream Poets event at Pulborough Village Hall. New member Violet Ayscough (pen name Dench) also read her poem 'Death of A Russian Emigre' which was highly commended in the Slipstream 2010 Poetry Competiton (West Sussex Entries)* The winner in this section was 'Night Crossing' by Jean Harvey*, from Horsham. She was presented with the Group's Chanctonbury Cup by Joyce Elsden. (*See Members' work 2010a for copies of poems).
Finola Holiday had her poem "Poppies in November" accepted by 'South' 41 to be published in May 2010. See under Members' Work 2010a.
Fay Marshall has had a story, 'Blunt Instrument', published in the collection 'Someone has to Die, Volume Two', Spikethecat, March 2010. Her poem 'Piers of the Realm' is published in the anthology 'A Sense of Place', United Press, March 2010, under the title 'The Pier - Worthing'. See under Members' Work 2010.
Virginia Monson had her poem "Small observances of grief" published in the magazine 'Fire'. See under Members' Work 2010.
At the end of 2009, The Silk Road Writers read poems on the theme of Valentine's Day, which have now been published in a collection titled "That old devil called love". Rilla Dudley had ten poems included. See under Members' Work 2010.
Members of the Chanctonbury Writers Group attended a poetry reading at the Swindon Arts Centre on 28th October 2009. It was held to celebrate the fortieth issue of "South" poetry magazine.
Poems by Fay Marshall and Finola Holiday had appeared in this issue, so they were invited to read a short selection of their work on the night.
The published poems were: 'Tristan and Isolde', by Fay Marshall, 'Getting the message' and 'Cerne Abbas - the Makeover' by Finola Holiday. See Under Members Work 2009b.
Chanctonbury Writers Group took part in the "SWAG Festival Floating Fish" evening event on Thursday 23rd July 2009 at Heene Gallery Worthing. Members read their own poems and afterwards presented the Chanctonbury Cup to the author of the best entry from a West Sussex resident in the SlipstreamPoets competition on a 'Sense of Place' Finola Holiday read her overall prize winning poem (see Members' work).
Pam O'Dell Obituary
Chanctonbury Writers sadly record the death on April 25th 2009 of one of our earliest members, Pam O'Dell. Pam toured with Ensa in the last war and appeared in the Connaught Theatre during her acting career. We will remember her well-observed and witty sketches of the world about her - one of which is posted under Members' Work 2009a.

During an afternoon of poetry readings and music showcasing the work of Sussex poets, Juliet West was presented with The Chanctonbury Cup awarded for the first time to the author of the best entry from a West Sussex resident in the Slipstream Poetry competition 'A sense of place'. The Chanctonbury Cup -'for the furthering of poetry in West Sussex' has been provided in memory of the late Jim Johnston, who did much to encourage poetry in the Horsham area, and was presented to Juliet by his widow. Among those Chanctonbury Writers who took part was Finola Holiday reading her overall prize-winning poem (see: Members' work 2009).

In July 2008, the Chantonbury Writers Group shared an evening of music and readings with S.W.A.G. (Sunny Worthing Arts Group) at the Dome, Worthing. At this event we celebrated the publication of our twentieth annual collection - 'Libra 20'.
In the summer of 2008, we also celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the Group's founding with a lunch at the Bailiffscourt hotel, Clymping. |
